What is Plain Packaging / Green Packaging?

The Government of Canada as of November 9, 2020 has put into effect a law that requires all cigars to be put into plain packaging. This also includes any packaging or boxes they may come in. Plain packaging is a generic and standardized packaging that is void of branding. The plain packaging will include only the brand name of the cigar, health warnings and any other legally required information.

Plain packaging of tobacco products in Canada was introduced to reduce the appeal of tobacco, increase the visibility of health warnings, and reduce misperceptions about the harmfulness of the products. The policy standardizes the appearance of packages, eliminating branding and attractive features, and making them drab brown / green with health warnings prominently displayed.

Every retailer in Canada must comply to this new law. In the case of being able to verify authenticity of a product. Canada does not have the capabilities at this point with their plain packaging. For example Cuban cigars have a Habanos manufacturers bar code that can be used to authenticate.
